What makes us different

We are inspired by our local community and it is the starting point of everything we do.

Wherever possible, our food comes from local farmers, growers and suppliers.

We offer employment and training opportunities to local people and provide much needed part time and flexible hours to support working parents, students and other part time workers.

Reduce, reuse and recycle is our motto! We believe that consuming does not have to cost the earth. At the Courtyard we take our recycling seriously. We recycle almost everything, leaving us with just one bin bag of non-recyclables a week.

We are proud to stock a wide range of local, ethically sourced, fair-trade, organic and sustainable products to suit all tastes and pockets.

We offer a discount to staff and customers for buying direct from our suppliers, thereby supporting those on low incomes or just a tight budget.

As a not for profit business we plough any profits we make back into the projects we’re so passionate about. Some of this profit goes back into Proper Job’s funds to help subsidise their free community workshops.  The rest goes to supporting a wide range of local events and projects including Chagford Swimming Pool, Film Festival and Chagstock – Dartmoors’ favorite summer festival!

We support local artists by providing a space to exhibit their work on our café walls and feel great that they get to keep 100% of the profits from their sales. Our window is regularly used by local initiatives to promote or advertise their goods or services, providing inspiration and information.

If you would like to promote your work or event at The Courtyard please get in touch.

Why we sell Organic and Fair-trade

We don’t believe your shopping should cost the earth.

Fairtrade products are made in safe and healthy working conditions, where farmers and producers receive a fair price for their produce and have a voice in how their workplace is run.

Organic means working with nature, not against it. It focuses on high levels of animal welfare, low levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers and more environmentally sustainable management of the land and natural environment.  Whatever you’re buying when you choose organic food, drink or beauty and textiles, you choose products that promote a better world.

All of the food that is sold and served at The Courtyard is either vegetarian or vegan.

We don’t sell meat, but if that’s what you’re looking for, we can highly recommend Chagford’s very own producer of high welfare organic meat and dairy:  Chagfarm is a Community Supported Agriculture project which provides organic meat, eggs and dairy boxes.  Take a look at what they do here.

Allergies and intolerances

We stock a wide range of gluten free, dairy free and meat free alternatives.
